A River now Runs Through San Diego
With the first pick in the 2004 NFL Draft the San Diego
Chargers select.... Eli Manning. That is not what a lot of people wanted but a
lot expected it, and after some booing, a trade was made and we got Philip
Rivers of N.C State. Philip is a great QB but is not ready to start. Not because
of all the reports that he had a rough first day but because of other
reports.
Reports that he is still throwing off of his back foot sometimes. He also needs
to work on his mechanics still too. Don't get me wrong this is River's team but
like any young QB, he needs to work and get better. Enter Drew Brees: I know
there are tons of people who hate him and tons who like him. Drew had a bad year
plain and simple, and lets face it Marty or his defense gave him no help. Brees
has 1 year left on his contract, and he has been working like crazy before and
during mini-camp. He has been working with all the WR's, this is a plus over
Rivers. Rivers doesn't know any of the receivers well enough yet. If we are to
start Brees in week one, see how he does that would be great. When we are ahead
by a lot we could put Rivers in, or if Brees stinks, we start Rivers. This year
we need to see if Brees will do well and if he does then he will start and
Rivers will get time to study from the sideline or even play late in the game.
The Offensive line is a wreck, and putting Rivers in there, his first season,
would probably be considered 1st degree murder. A QB like Brees who has more
experience then Rivers is used to a bad OL, and lets not forget Doug Flutie. Our
QB situation is still up in the
air. One thing is for sure if Brees performs like he did last year then the
starting job is given to Rivers. Giving Rivers the job is not my favorite option
but it will help him, or maybe hurt him. This is Rivers team and Brees might not
be around much longer...
